How much alcohol for a wedding?

The general rule is to have one drink per guest on hand for every hour the bar is open, and up to three for a crowd that likes a big night (from Easy Weddings' Wedding alcohol tips). The calculator multiplies that out, splits the drinks across wine, beer and spirits, and turns them into bottles and cartons using standard serve sizes. It's how much to buy, not how much anyone should drink.

Those serve sizes come from the Australian Department of Health's Standard drinks guide and the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's What is a standard drink?. Every amount is rounded up, so you won't run short. Figures last checked 12 October 2026.

Please drink responsibly. Australian guidelines say healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 on any one day (the Australian Department of Health's How much alcohol is safe to drink?). Free advice and support is available on 1800 250 015.

Getting the numbers right

  1. Count the drinkers, not the invites

Leave out the kids, the drivers and anyone who doesn't drink. The calculator works on the people who'll actually have a glass.

  2. Look after your guests

Keep food and water going all night, have good non-alcoholic options, and make sure everyone has a safe way home.

  3. Ask before you buy

Your venue or caterer may already include some drinks or have rules about bringing your own. Check, then buy only the gap.

Count your drinkers with your RSVPs

The number that matters most is how many guests will drink, so ask them. Add a question to your WedBuild RSVP form and the answers are counted for you as replies come in. Online RSVPs with your own questions are free for up to 50 guests on our Essentials plan.
