How to split your wedding budget

  1. Lock in the big two first

The venue and catering make up 45% of the split. Once those quotes are in, everything else has a real number to fit around.

  2. Leave out what you won't have

No videographer or photo booth? Untick them and their share moves to the things you're keeping.

  3. Keep some aside

Couples in the survey spent about 30% more than their starting budget. Money held back for surprises keeps that from hurting.

Track it as you go

A split is the plan. WedBuild's budget planner keeps the plan and the real spending side by side: set your category budgets, log quotes, deposits and payments, and always see what's still owing.

The average wedding budget breakdown (2026)

Here's where the calculator's numbers come from. The split is based on Easy Weddings' 2026 cost figures, drawn from an annual survey of 4,000+ engaged and recently married couples. They list the average spend on each part of the wedding. Each average comes from the couples who paid for that item, so together they add up to more than the average wedding (A$38,252). The calculator keeps their proportions and scales them to your total.

The engagement ring is left out, because it isn't part of the wedding budget. Figures last checked 12 October 2026.
