Simple or Invoice tracking: which to use

Simple lets you type what each line item costs and what you've paid. Invoice works it out from the invoices and payments you add. Switch at the top of Budget.

Works on your phone

There are two ways to keep track of what you're spending. Simple is quick: you type the numbers in. Invoice does the adding up for you from each vendor's invoice and every payment. You can switch whenever you like.

Steps

  1. Open Budget. On the Dashboard or Budget tab, the Tracking switch (1) sits at the top right, or in the bar at the top on a phone. Choose Simple or Invoice. The (i) beside it explains both.

  2. Using Simple? Go to the Budget tab and choose Edit Mode (Edit on a phone). The button changes to Exit Edit Mode (1). Type what each line item costs under Actual (2) and what you've paid so far under Paid (3). Enter saves and moves down, Tab moves across and Esc undoes. Choose Exit Edit Mode when you're done.

  3. Using Invoice? Add each vendor's invoice on the Expenses tab (here's how) and record payments as you make them. Actual and Paid then fill in by themselves, so you can't type over them.

Good to know

  • Choose Simple for a quick picture of where the money's going.
  • Choose Invoice if you're paying deposits and instalments. The Dashboard then adds Payments due and Payments by month, so you can see what's coming up.
  • Switching never deletes anything. Each way keeps its own numbers, and they come back when you switch back.
  • It's one setting for your whole budget. A new budget starts on Simple.
  • The Dashboard's names change with it. What you've spent is Spent in Simple tracking and Committed in Invoice tracking.
  • The Expenses tab works either way, but its invoices only count towards Actual and Paid in Invoice tracking.
